History Meme: [2/5] Moments - The Execution of Charles I
After losing a nine year civil war, Charles I found himself on trial accused of being a “tyrant, traitor and murderer”. The king refused to recognise the legitimacy of the court but that did little the change the outcome. It was the only time in British history that a monarch was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. His public beheading left the country without a monarch which led to his opponent, Oliver Cromwell, to rule as king in all but name in his place.
